ABOUT TANGOS AI
Tangos AI is building the AI platform that automates financial crime investigations. Compliance teams at banks and fintechs drown in alerts (money laundering, fraud, sanctions), and every one of them still ends with a human writing up a case by hand. Our platform maps entities and ownership structures, gathers and reasons over the evidence, and produces a documented, audit-ready investigation file.
We’re a small, senior team with people from U.S. Treasury/OFAC, Israeli intelligence, and AI research, and early enough that the people we hire now will shape the architecture, not inherit it.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You’ll build the backend platform that runs financial crime investigation workflows at scale. The focus is reusable, configurable workflows that coordinate data, evidence, and investigation steps, with reliable execution and traceable results.
You’ll own backend design and architecture and deliver reliable production code throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC): planning, design, implementation, review, testing, validation, integration, release, and production support.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Own the design and architecture of scalable backend services and APIs, documenting decisions and evaluating trade-offs in reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Design PostgreSQL data models for entities, ownership structures, and evidence, preserving source provenance and links to investigation findings while owning query performance.
- Build reusable, configurable workflows and reliable asynchronous processing, with idempotency, retries, recovery, and explicit handling of partial failures.
- Integrate internal services, customer systems, and external data sources, validating contracts and data quality. Work with AI engineers to integrate AI capabilities into investigation workflows.
- Implement service-level security, tenant isolation, access controls, and audit trails that support enterprise customer requirements.
- Maintain high coding standards through clear, maintainable code and code reviews. Define acceptance criteria and write automated unit, integration, system, regression, and performance tests to validate changes before release.
- Monitor production behavior and performance, diagnose failures, and improve the reliability and scalability of the services you own.
REQUIREMENTS
- 6+ years of backend development experience.
- Proven experience delivering production systems used by external users.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of writing maintainable backend code, reviewing changes, and following a disciplined SDLC.
- Experience designing and delivering scalable distributed systems, APIs, queues, and background processing, with practical understanding of concurrency and failure handling.
- Strong SQL and data modeling skills (PostgreSQL preferred).
- Solid grasp of observability, performance, and running production systems.
- Works with AI development tools daily (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) as a core part of the workflow.
- Track record of leading significant technical work independently, start to finish.
- Excellent English, written and spoken.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience working with enterprise customers and their security and integration requirements.
- Experience building LLM/agent-based backends (RAG, tool use, evals).
- Python.
- Experience with graph data, entity resolution, or data-intensive systems.
- Cloud-native infrastructure (GCP/AWS), Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Background in fintech, compliance, AML/KYC, fraud, or another regulated domain.
